A summary of the issues and problems of degradation of riparian vegetation is followed by a delineation of practical management strategies for areas of largely intact riparian vegetation, and for rehabilitating areas of degraded vegetation. Critical factors for each condition include: stock management, weed control, fire control, feral animal control, nutrients, land use and monitoring of vegetation cover and structure. Rehabilitation of degraded riparian vegetation also requires identification of a clear set of objectives which will influence the adoption of appropriate guidelines. The relative advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to revegetation including planting seedlings, fencing off the area and relying on natural regeneration, or direct seeding are also discussed (A).
